At this time of the year our time is largely spent looking forward to the next holiday season. That means taking a close look at our website, adding new villas and updating prices where necessary.

It has struck me how much booking patterns have changed over the 22 years that I have been running One Stop Italy. In the olden days, January and February would be the key months for new bookings; the phone would literally not stop ringing all day. (Of course in 1988 there was no internet and not even a fax machine in our office!)

Nowadays, the year has fewer peaks and troughs though there is always a spike in July/August as the late-bookers coincide with the early birds. For example, this year we had a last-minute rush for August 2010 holidays at the same time as people were booking one year ahead for large group, family reunion and wedding accommodation for 2011.

The biggest change of all has been the move towards large group holidays. Customers have realised that the cost savings can be enormous and yet – and this is important – they don’t have to sacrifice their privacy. Rather than sharing an independent villa they can, if they wish, take over a group of farmhouse apartments. The end result is the same: private use of swimming pool, tennis court and any other on-site facilities. But at the same time each family also has its own space, living room, kitchen etc. Here’s an example of  this type of family group holiday – see La Contea.

At One Stop Italy we’re so pleased to hear that CityJet are launching a new service to Florence airport from London City airport starting 10th January 2011 with a limited service also over the Christmas period.

As this small, easy to use airport is only 4 miles from Florence city centre, this means that travellers can be in their holiday accommodation enjoying their first glass of Italian wine within minutes of arriving in Italy.

My suggestion for a great short break in Florence is Santa Trinita, an apartment in a historic palazzo in the heart of the city. The property sleeps 2 (with an option to sleep 4 at a supplement). Daily rental rates Euro 180, weekly rates Euro 1050.  For more information and to book, please visit our webpage for Santa Trinita. Or contact us here.

We are now busy updating our website with the 2011 rental prices for our Italian villas.  In most cases the 2010 prices have been held, and in some cases have even been reduced.  You can already see a selection of holiday villas of various sizes where we are already taking bookings for 2011. Villas sleeping 6-8 people and villas sleeping 9-12 people for a start.  More to follow.

Regular readers of my blog posts will know that I’m a bit of a footie fan and have been following Italy’s fortunes in the World Cup as my “back-up” in case England didn’t progress in the competition (!!).  Well, it worked in 2006 …  but yesterday the Champions were defeated by lowly Slovakia and have failed to reach the next round.

Their coach Marcello Lippi has manfully taken the blame for his side’s poor performance, but in truth the team never looked like winners. In fact they didn’t win a single game, and only really started playing when it was too late.

So it all rests on England now. I gather they’re ramping up the penalty practice.

More and more of our customers are choosing a 2 centre self-catering holiday in Italy rather than the traditional two weeks in one place. In my experience this makes your holiday seem longer, as you get the thrill of discovering two different places rather than just one. So now I always suggest it as a possibility from the outset when discussing options. It’s amazing how often people then say “oh, I’d never thought of that, what a good idea!”

It also means you can take advantage of good value single flight fares, flying into one airport and leaving from another. Car hire in this case is no problem, you just pick your vehicle up at say Pisa and drop it elsewhere usually for just a small extra charge.

Some people like to travel no more than an hour or so on the change-over day, maybe from Tuscany into Umbria for example. Others go further afield from say Tuscany in Central Italy to the Veneto in the North, or the Italian Lakes. Or down to Rome or the Amalfi Coast beyond Naples.

The end result is a tailor-made holiday. Starting building yours at www.onestopitaly.com

A big response to my previous blog posts about Lake Trasimeno, so I thought today I’d talk about one of our properties in that area where there are just a few July/August weeks still remaining. I went there myself many years ago and it has always been very popular with families because there are a lot of sporty activities on-site:  swimming pool, table tennis, volleyball ground, tennis court, bicycle hire.

It’s called Quiete and it’s located in a quiet spot just 13km from Lake Trasimeno (where there are watersports of all kinds). There are three apartments in the property and the rental price for the school summer holiday period is Euro 705 per week (approx. £625 at current exchange rate) for those sleeping 6 people, and the the one sleeping 8 is a bit more expensive. Very good value for money. Plus you have the Etruscan town of Cortona at approx 15km to satisfy any cultural requirements! You can fly from Stansted to Perugia, from where it  is only a short drive to the accommodation.
